I'm including the questions and responses. CUMREC-L is for administrative information system questions and answers. The bottom line is there is no cheap, high volume answer from folks on that list. Any vendors out there listening?????? IBM has given us mixed answers on whether an envelope feed will be available for a 3816. IT SHOULDN'T BE THAT HARD TO DO AT A REASONABLE COST!!!!! For example, an HP LaserJet Series II is $1250 and |the HP LaserJet Series IID is $1950. Both of these print eight |pages per minute; the IID has capability for envelope feed (which |really works), dual paper tray and duplex printing. | |IBM is marketing a new printer called the IBM 4019. It is 10 pages |per minute and very fast with graphics. We compared graphics printing |on HP lasers & the 4019--IBM's printer was almost twice as fast. |Pricing on the new IBM printer is good too - approximately $2000 |(depending of course on the options you get). | |Jeff Hunter |Management Information Resource Center |NC State University |N988483@NCSUADM.BITNET | |>>> Item number 492, dated 90/02/14 13:24:32 -- ALL |Date: Wed, 14 Feb 90 13:24:32 CST |Reply-To: CUMREC-L Administrative computer use |Sender: CUMREC-L Administrative computer use |From: Sandy Statham |Subject: Mass Mailings/Envelope Handling | | Envelopes are a big business at the University of Arkansas |just like they are at other colleges and universities. If anyone else would like to add anything, |please contribute to the list for all of us. Thanks! | |----------------------------------------------------------------------- |From: "Charles M. Seymour" | |Good luck on finding anything. We were using the IBM System 6/440, |a word processing system developed in about 1977, with envelope, letter, |and merge capabilities to handle this. It was a six letter per minute |device. We have been unable to find any quality device to handle the |mid-range mailing operations (less than 1M per). We have installed some |Toshiba PageLaser12 devices with expanded envelope handling devices. |This is not the high speed device we would like to have (and which we |have been unable to find). Please let me know if you find something |more appropriate. |----------------------------------------------------------------------- |From: | |If you find anyone who is successfully doing anything like what you're |describing with mailings, I'd appreciate hearing about it also. We're |looking at alternatives for mailing out grades, and also looking at the |potential postage savings of bar-coding. So if you get any private |replies -- i.e., not posted to the mail-list -- perhaps you could share |some of the information.
