What exactly was new to the bass guitar playing of Jaco Pastorius?

I just heard a book review of Greil Marcus' Lipstick Traces and it was
highly recommended. His Mystery Train is regarded as one of the best books
dealing with rock music. Is this book available in paperback? Where is it
published?

And now the 2 dollar question: Who wrote the song "Lipstick Traces" ?
