The German state which originally occupied the territory which we think of as Prussia was Brandenburg (hence the gate in Berlin). The hereditary seat of the Prussian kings was Koenigsburg, now known by the melodious name of Kaliningrad. There were German universities in the eastern marches of Prussia, notably at Dorpat (now Talin). The city of Gdansk was, since medieval times, a German city-state named Danzig. The present Polish state is an artifice carved from the original german territory by Woodrow Wilson and his wicked fellow victors at Versailles in 1920.
