For some time, I thought that the recording industry and the CD mfgs. had struck some sort of deal to keep this type device off the market (similar to the DAT controversy). Recently, however, I found that a number of CD audio players will output the audio track in a standard digital format (the standard name escapes me at the moment) for connection to receivers which can process digital audio directly.
