Elm is quite popular at my site (and others) precisely because it insulates the users from (most) of the stupidity of headers. The very few times that headers are needed, they *like* having them in a separate menu. Agreed that there's a lot of dain-bramaged news software out there, but that's no excuse to force users to deal with headers they usually don't need, want, or understand.
