For Rainbow TOS (TOS 1.4), XXX need only be the number of folders you'll have "active" at once. "Active" folders are those involved in file searches, open files, etc. If you open a file, the folder it's in and all the parents of that folder are "active;" if you open another file in the same directory, you haven't increased the number of active folders.
