Are you limiting yourself to DOS on a PC? PCs can of course run UNIX, just like those workstations you mention. And now that we have VGA, graphics capabilities are beginning to challenge the big boys. Then there are, of course, all those "PCs" acting as multi-user LAN servers. But that's another story.
