Specifically, my umask is 022, and the "file creation mask" of the Preferences application is set to rwxr-xr-x, so in both cases write access should be given only to the owner (me). When I create a file with vi in a Terminal window, the file is given the proper permissions, i.e. -rw-r--r-- But when I create a new file with Edit, it gets -rw-rw-rw- This is obviously not what I want. Can someone explain this to me, and tell me how to fix it? Craig Artley cartley@csm9a.mines.colorado.edu (303) 273-3557 Department of Geophysics, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO 80401
