The LaTeX book says you can change this parameter only in the
preamble. I need to do it. I have different page layouts for
the same document. Changing the \pagestyle is clearly not enough.
But I have failed to produce an effective change in \textheight.

I have studied how it interacts with \vsize and others but I
don't understand it well enough.

Has anyone done that?
