Thanks. My xloadimage program views gif images and will automatically (or on demand) dither images to monochrome for viewing. It also works on Sun Rasterfile, XBM, XPM, Faces Project, and PBM image formats. It'll probably work fine for your needs. If you have internet access it's ftp'able from expo.lcs.mit.edu in /contrib/xloadimage.1.03.tar.Z, and a patchfile /contrib/xloadimage/1.04.patch.Z which brings it up to the current revision.
