Hi Stephen,
 
Who gives hearing tests over the telephone and then says you're hearing impaired
if you can't hear one of four tones? That sounds kinda fishy to me?
 
All of my hearing tests are done at either a University or state owned Hearing
and Speech clinic. I never have heard of over-the-telephone testing? Also, even
if you or wife could hear all four tones, it wouldn't necessarily mean that
you weren't hearing impaired.
 
I "hear" lots of things, some soft tones included, however, I don't understand
speech very well without hearing aids or ALDS. The point being there are some
different types of hearing impairments and loss. 
 
I would suspect that you should go to a real clinic and have your wife undergo
real testing (which consists of a lot more than listening to "four tones!".
Usually, Hearing and Speech clincs that are part of a University are very affordable
and the students administering the tests are closely superivised by qualified
persons and (the students) usually have their masters degrees. (Well, at least
out here!) Then you and she will know whether she needs hearing aids or ALDs.

 
I don't think you should run right out and look for hearing aids to purchase
on the basis of four tones over a telephone (Assuming I understand your message.).
Hearing Aids can be amazingly expensive! Also, I don't know about where you
are, but I had to have a doctors presciption for my aids. (I am in Sacramento)
