In the August 1985 issue of Byte, p. 42, there was an announcement for
"biometal", a nickel and titanium alloy that would contract when current
was passed through it.  Unfortunately, when I recently tried to call the
company, I found out that they are no longer exist.

Has anyone else ever heard of this stuff, and/or do you know of any
small-quantity sources for it?
