/bin/login distributed with Concentrix 5.5.02 searches in
/var/spool/mail instead of /usr/spool/mail for new mail (and doesn't
announce new mail then).

Workaround: Create a symbolic link from /var/spool/mail to
            /usr/spool/mail.
