Yes: There is an option on the modem menu (I believe thats the menu) that allows for 'Ignore carrier detect'. If you enable the 'Ignore carrier detect' your transfers should go without any problem. I had a similar problem with a modem and cable that did not support that line (carrier detect), selecting that mode got rid of the lost carrier messages.
