Is there any software in existence (commercial, PD, or otherwise) for 
processing 8 bit greyscale images?  I assume it would have to do some
sort of pseudo greyscale rendering in HAM, or use the Progressive
Peripherals FrameGrabber 256 board.  I'm interested in fairly standard
operations like smoothing and subtraction of one image from another.

I need to know soon, so any prompt answers will be appreciated, no matter
how misguided.  :-)
