Jim Tittsler of Atari ("sort of a hardware guy" he calls himself, I think that means chief hardware engineer or something) once emailed me a note saying that he thought you could drop a 65802 chip right into an Atari 800, and you could probably also make up a little board to plug one into an 800XL or 130XE, by cribbing the tri-state driver circuitry out of the 800 schematic (it's included in the custom chip 6502 version in the XL/XE). I guess it follows that such a board would also be a way to fix an 800XL in the future when the custom chip is no longer available. The 65816 would probably be a more ambitious upgrade, I don't know much about how it differs. I have not been able to locate the name of the person who was doing 65802 and 65816 upgrade designs a couple of years ago but will keep looking... -John Sangster
