Conway I had the same problem, tried another 64, and it worked fine. Apparently the custom keyboard scanning routine in kermit is sensitive to the timing of the keyboard interface chips. Also apparently, the timing characteristics of these chips has varied over the production life of the 64. Maybe you could trade with someone who doesn't care about kermit.
