You have of course tried turning up the brightness and contrast controls 
on the rear of the unit, no?  There are also some pots inside, one 
of which (don't know which it is) can be tweaked to turn up the brightness.
 
If that fails, your best course is to buy a new one from DEC.  They 
are currently on sale @ $75 for white phosphor and $100 for green or 
amber.
