The manual for getlogin() states that it retrieves the information from /etc/utmp, so what the X server has to do with it is beyond me. Symptoms include the fact that "who" works, "whoami" works, but "who am i" doesn't. If you try to run "talk" it exits immediately with the humorous :-( message "You don't exist. Go away."
