I supposed the low cost Mac is out because of competition from the clones. Low cost Mac is aimed at the rest of us, but when you look around, there are PC clones, ST, and Amigas with colors. Putting color on a low cost Mac would probably erode price and profits margins on the higher end machines. I guess Apple decided they were better off keeping the low end and high end separate, and probably make the Apple II crowd happy. In doing so however, I feel that Apple has turn the Macintosh away from the rest of us, and it will go the way of the corporations who can afford it. Macs are probably going to be concentrated on the high end workstations, with less emphasize on the mid end. The question is what about Apple's vision of multimedia? The Plus and SE is definitely out of the picture as multimedia goes with no color or stero sound chip. Any of the Mac II series will be at the high end, who will be the low end? Is Apple IIGS supposed to be our multimedia machine? In any case, all views above is just a guess, and not entirely accurate. I would like to hear some views and response on this.
