Muchos gracias to all who replied to my origonal question.

The answer of course was that the capability was there all the time (at
least in NCSA v2.2 or later). The trick is to hit the configure button
instead of <CR> or the OK button in the "Open connection" dialog box.
A classic case of RTFM. Sorry for the wasted bandwidth....
