Summary: I need one! Keywords: Quantum Q540 hard drive crash Message-ID: <1990Mar5.200347.26801@cs.utk.edu> Date: 5 Mar 90 20:03:47 GMT References: <9343@wpi.wpi.edu> Sender: mueller@cs.utk.edu Followup-To: comp.sys.amiga Distribution: usa Organization: University of Tennessee CS Department Lines: 20 ---l.e.f.--- I'll save everyone the story of how it happened, but my parents' hard drive recently got FRIED! 120V was sent to where only 5 or 12 belonged. The mechanism was a Quantum Q540 (5.25" FH 37meg). I've just taken a look at it, and with the power supply properly hooked up it still smokes. The control board on the drive definitely needs work (i.e. replacement perhaps). My hope here is that the data can be salvaged if this board is fixed. This may not do the trick if components within the "bubble" are fried also, but I need to try. So, I would like to know if anyone has a crashed Q540 which they could part with for a reasonably small price. The electronics need to be working, of course, but the media condition is unimportant. Any suggestions are welcome (by email, of course). I also plan to contact Quantum to see if they can offer any help. -Carl Mueller (mueller@cs.utk.edu or cmueller@utkvx.bitnet)
