I too had the good old SE "Aircraft Carrier" fan from hell, but did install
the Mobius fan when it became available.  1) Yes it did work, cutting down
noise by my estimate 60%.  2) The soldering was a breeze (no pun intended),
but I recommend a SMALL pair of needle nose pliers to take the holddown
nuts of if you don't have a 3/16" box wrench available.  I am a very happy
customer, I no longer get the fan shimmy that I used to get and the machine 
is much quiter.
