I would apprciate any help that you can give on this topic.

I tend to work late at night.  In an effort to not wake the
children, I don't print (with an imagewriter) and I put a
1/8" phone plug in the headphone jack to remove any beeps that
might occur.  I do this instead of turning the sound off in the
control panel because the also will eliminate the startup 
beep.

The problem is, after the last time I did this, the sound 
never returned.  I am about to crack the case to see what
is amiss, but I thought that I would ask the USENET brain
trust before entering the operating room.
