It will probably show a message along the lines of '/bin/noshell non-existant' or some such nonsense. If so, the path to your account is probably mucked-- make sure you can actually get at your home directory and everything is okay there. If the probably is global, it sounds like one of the *.cf (various configuration files) are slightly buggered-- that would be another possibility.
