 I would *highly* recommend:
  "The Unix Programming Environment", Kernigan & Pike,
  Prentice-Hall.

  "Advanced Unix Programming", Marc Rothchild,
  Prentice-Hall.

 The titles say it all. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation
 with Prentice-Hall, just a lot of their books.
